Washington Post Writes about Pulaski

Recently this article crossed my Facebook feed and I thought it might add insight into the current situation in the New River Valley. While some of us aren’t able to get pay raises, or buy that new pair of Mary Janes we’re lusting over, others can’t afford groceries or electricity for their families. Let’s not forget to be grateful for what we have and always try to take care of each other. If you want to live in a nice community you must contribute to it. Click on the photo to see a few organizations helping out! If you’re looking for a good place to start donating, check out United Way to find a way to help that suits you!

Sincerely,

Jessey

Rhubarb Throwdown!

Evenin’!

Since celebrating it’s first anniversary of opening, Lucie Monroe’s Coffee Company has been having monthly throwdowns-challenges if you will- to test the knowledge and know how of the managers and staff. Tonight they will host two local foodies as they both make their best effort at rhubarb pie. Carol, writer for Cambria Cooks blog, will be going up against Laura (of Bollos and Souvlaki fame). This all kicks off at 7pm tonight, Lucie Monroe’s Coffee Company, 1600 Roanoke St, Sweet B  [; )]!

If Rhubarb is not your thing, check out this recipe from Cambria Cooks: Chocolate Macaroon Pie! I’m gonna try this one out soon- it looks too delicious!

Happy Tasting!

Destruction and Community

This morning on the radio I heard there were 150 homes destroyed in Pulaski and Draper, Virginia. The total number of buildings damaged is around 400, with an estimated 8.5 million dollars worth of damage (news link). I read the sirens went off as the tornados were making their way through the small town and community. We’ve always been told that we couldn’t have tornados here because the mountains would keep them out. Now that we know that isn’t true, will we have a better warning system in case there is a next time?

"'Where was your insurance agent?' Thank you wyatt insurance (Jamie and Scott) for not only showing up but for helping. We appreciate it." Diana, Pulaski VA

At least in times like this people come together and help each other, whether it’s removing trees or picking up debris, to even roofing and rebuilding. Here are some neighborhood helpers worthy of a shout out. Wyatt’s Insurance Agency and Thacker Insurance, with offices in Fort Chiswell and Christiansburg, and L&H Tree Gone from Giles County (please see previous post).

Here is a link to photos from the residents on facebook.

Send a few positive thoughts to southwest Virginia.

Picasso in Virginia

Good Day!

I just had a lovely Friday at the Picasso exhibit at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond! Only three hours away from our lovely NRV, the VMFA is actually a top ten museum in the US. I’m not quoting anyone specifically, but I did hear that somewhere.
The museum is free to enter, but special exhibits require tickets so be prepared for that. Upon entering there is a pretty cool sculpture garden with a waterfall and flowing ground level pond/pool. There’s a patio just outside of the museum cafe that sits by the water, if you’re looking for a casual but cool date spot or meeting with friends.

The Picasso exhibit is co-organised by the VMFA and the Picasso Museum of Paris (Musée National Picasso, Paris). There are eleven rooms organized by time period, including paintings, sculpture, and photographs. It Is well worth a couple of hours and $20 to check it out!

Happy April!
